Godzilla – Making bad puns really obscured

April 21, 2010

This started life in late 2008, intended as a painting to be a birthday present, but only taken as far as inks and blocking colours on computer. The catalyst was a pun, but being me, I had to try to take it beyond… well, um, beyond usefulness. So I got a friend to translate the pun into Japanese text (thanks Emily!). Being embarrassingly monolingual I trust she isn’t deceiving me and hasn’t given me a highly offensive insult instead.

Unfortunately I had to put it on hold, probably due to moving, and I’ve not had studio space to break out the alkyds and get a proper painting done since. I can’t remember what I gave as a present instead, probably a kinder egg.

Having stumbled across the inks again yesterday I was inspired to try knocking up the colours using Artrage – a paint simulation program that I got with a wacom tablet and had been meaning to try out for a while.

It’s certainly taken far longer than a pun of this quality deserves.

It’s been requested I explain, so; key terms to enlighten: Godzilla, Gamera, Camera Obscura

Godzilla – Gamera Obscura

Well, was it worth it?

Brighton Hourly Sketches

April 6, 2010

Went to a friend’s wedding in Brighton recently and decided to stay up through the night, doing a post-it sketch every hour of where ever I’d wandered to by that point and posting it on twitter, until people started getting back up. Starting at 2 am at a pub / club (The Globe, IIRC).

Seemed like a good idea at the time, but I’d forgotten how cold my fingers would get.

Clearer views can be seen here.
